This paper is an initial attempt to evaluate stock markets in the area. Its first part analyzes a number of general relevant aspects concerning the function, organization, and regulation of these markets in Central America and Panama . The second part contains individual studies of stock markets on a per country basis, and the third part identifies those areas requiring priority attention in the development of stock markets in the area. The Stock Market Development Project aims at achieving a better understanding of current negotiation schemes for securities in Central America in order to develop an orderly process of stock market integration. This will provide the real sector of economies with financial solutions required to progress in the search for higher levels of international competitiveness.
