442Characteristics and Impact of Costa Rican Investment in Nicaragua During the Period 1990 - 2001. - Pérez, Felipe

This study promotes a reflexive national attitude about Costa Rican foreign investment. It provides input so the people in charge of policies to attract productive investment improve the policies, actions, and means that facilitate a better bilateral relationship between Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Likewise, investors who are potentially interested in exploring the Nicaraguan market can find valuable ideas and lessons about how Costa Rican companies have performed in the host country's regulatory environment. The results are interesting and underscore that Costa Rican investment in Nicaragua has not stopped. Instead, it has continued to grow until reaching an approximate total of US $105 MM, representing approximately one-third of the direct foreign investment in the country. The jobs generated by these companies are overwhelmingly staffed by Nicaraguans. Women are a high percentage of them and represent, on average, forty-two percent of these companies' work force. In addition, the salary difference between both countries continues to explain, to a large degree, the increase in Costa Rican investment in the country.
