In line with its mission as a Central American development bank CABEI wishes to incorporate new qualitative standards into the evaluation of the tourism sector credits. Particularly, CABEI is interested in considering the findings of the Latin American Center for Competitiveness and Sustainable Development (CLACDS) in relation to the potential for sustainable tourism development in the region. CABEI is also interested in including these findings in its credit evaluation criteria so that it can foster, through its financial activity, the creation of clusters with high competitive potential in Central America . In that context, the identification of tourism market segments that should be given priority in considering them as credit subjects is of special interest for CABEI. An effort for this purpose is made in this paper. It begins with an overview of tourism current economic situation in Central America ; next, it explains opportunities available in the sector; then, it analyzes CABEI participation in the tourism sector in terms of its current portfolio, behavior, potential exposition to risk and possible future market. Finally, the paper concludes with specific action recommendations for the Bank.
