This document brings up the challenge of introducing the set of environmental problems as a pivotal point in all the Puebla Panama Plan (PPP) initiatives. The document contains a brief description of the historical background behind the Central American integration process and building the plan, an analysis of the plan's structure and current situation in general, the IMDS progress and challenges, specifically the needs and opportunities for introducing the environmental issue into each of the PPP initiatives, and proposes a mechanism for making them operational. Given the priority of avoiding environmental deterioration as a consequence of the infrastructure projects included in various initiatives, the environmental impact evaluation requirements are analyzed and a mechanism is proposed for coordinating the studies necessary for the regional projects within the plan.
