This study, intended to serve as a discussion paper on public insecurity in the process to enhance Central America 's competitiveness, attempts to reflect facts and perceptions influencing the behavior of economic agents in the five countries of the region. In the first part an explanation is provided of the theoretical framework and the analysis used in the research work, illustrating how public security is related to competitiveness and how this relationship directly influences economic agents in these countries. After exposing the methodology used, the study offers a diagnosis of the insecurity situation in the area both on aggregate and on a per country basis, and compares findings with occurrences outside the region. Finally, the study conclusions are offered.
