A paper intended to show the competitive performance of Central American exports as a whole and those of each country in the international market between 1986 and 1996. For this purpose an in-depth study is made of trade relationships of Central American countries with most developed economies belonging to the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) as well as on main items exported to the United States . The paper considers both regional competitive performance vis-a-vis other regions in the world and a specific-country analysis to identify the main export items to each of these markets and the degree of insertion of goods linked to export sector groups such as agribusiness, textiles, and electric and electronic product manufacturing.
