Obama Congratulates INCAE Business School as it Celebrates 50th Year

INCAE, May 6, 2013. Recommendations developed by Central America's public and private sector leaders for addressing several of the region's challenges were presented by INCAE Business School President Arturo Condo to U.S. President Barack Obama and Costa Rica and SICA President Laura Chinchilla as part of the Central America Forum, which concluded Saturday in San Jose, Costa Rica. Panama President Ricardo Martinelli and Guatemala President Otto Perez, both INCAE graduates, also attended the Forum.
In addition, Presidents Obama and Chinchilla answered questions about the Forum's topics of energy, logistical integration and inclusive economic growth and development from audience members. Over the two-day meeting, more than 200 private sector and civil society leaders from Central America, Mexico and the Dominican Republic participated in break-out sessions that addressed these topics and served as forums for development of the recommendations.
President Obama, who pointed out Martinelli and Perez's ties to INCAE, congratulated INCAE for its accomplishments. Building on this and INCAE's founding with President John F. Kennedy's involvement, Obama said at the Forum, "President Kennedy visited 50 years ago and I think recognized at that time the enormous potential for the private sector as a critical ingredient in progress and development for the hemisphere as a whole. When you combined good government with a thriving free market, it was an extraordinary recipe for opportunity for all people. And for me to be able to visit 50 years later and to see how much progress has been made both in the region and in the ties between the United States and Central America, I think this indicates that President Kennedy's vision was sound. It also speaks to the importance of us continuing to build these kinds of networks and relationships for the future."
For President Condo, the most visible and important conclusion from this forum was a solid consensus that this process is not about miles per hour for transporting goods or billions of dollars in energy investments. "It's about creating a different and better future for our people in a truly integrated region. We must act quickly with private sector, public sector and civil society all working together," Condo said.
