María Elena Carballo holds a degree in Spanish Philology from University of Costa Rica and a Ph.D. in Literary Studies from Brandeis University. Her doctoral thesis was based on The Autumn of the Patriarch by Gabriel García Márquez and the Latin American novels of dictatorship.

She was a Fulbright-LASPAU Scholar for three years and won the Hirschfeld Fellowship Award for two years in a row at Brandeis University. “La Casa Paterna” (The Father's House,) a book she co-authored, won the 1993 National Essay Award in Costa Rica.

At INCAE Business School she has devoted herself to humanities and communication as a part of the general education required for leadership today.
