María Elena Carballo

Biography

Professor María Elena Carballo, from Costa Rica, obtained her Ph.D in Literary Studies from Brandies University in the United States. She wrote her dissertation on El Otoño del Patriarca, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and the Hispanic novel during the dictatorship.

Before joining INCAE, she was Fulbright-LASPAU scholar for three years, and for two consecutive years, she also received the Hirschfeld Fellowship at Brandeis Unversity. The book  La Casa Paterna, which she co-authored, won the national essay award in 1993 in Costa Rica.

As an assistant professor at INCAE, she teaches courses in the areas of humanities and communication in the full-time MBA programs.

Work Experience

La doctora María Elena Carballo tiene una licenciatura en Filología Española de la Universidad de Costa Rica y un Ph. D. en estudios Literarios de Brandeis University. Su tesis doctoral fue sobre El otoño del patriarca de García Márquez y la novela hispanoamericana de la dictadura. Ha sido becaria Fulbright-LASPAU por tres años y obtuvo dos años consecutivos el Hirschfeld Fellowship en Brandeis Unversity. El libro la casa paterna, del cual es coautora, ganó el premio nacional de ensayo de 1993 en Costa Rica. En INCAE, se ha dedicado al área de humanidades y comunicación como parte de la formación general que se requiere para el liderazgo en la época actual.
